Several Remington 700’s with a very similar modification. This post is more about the bolt. You’ll notice it’s fluted/spiraled. Among the bolt-action community there is a debate about the practicality of this option offered by some gunsmiths and companies.
Proponents of fluted bolts say it’s for weight reduction and being able to cycle the bolt even if mud, dirt and debris get in the action. Opponents of fluted bolts say that the weight reduction is so miniscule that it makes no difference and that the debris defense seems to be faulty by those who have tried to replicate such a scenario.
In the end it seems to be more of an aesthetic reason, simply because it looks cool to some gun owners. I was tempted to get my Remington 700’s bolt fluted just for the looks but putting that on hold for now.
